Clavijero, Francisco Javier

Clavijero, Francisco Javier (fränsēs'kō hävyer' klävēhā'rō) [key], 173187, Mexican scholar and historian. A Jesuit, he taught in Mexico until the expulsion of the order (1767). From his refuge in Italy he wrote several works, the most important being The History of Mexico (tr. 1787), which shows an immense knowledge of Native American languages, customs, and history.
